Cuban coffee in three simple steps!
When many Cubans migrated to South Florida during the 1960s, they brought with them their love for coffee. Ever since, Miami has been running on café cubano.
Today, I will show you how to prepare a delicious cafecito from the comfort of your own home.
This is a traditional method of preparing this unique cup of coffee that will blow your mind. It’s bold, it’s strong, it’s intense, and it has a syrupy sweetness that leaves you wanting more and more!
Three Simple Steps For Making Cuban Coffee
So let’s get to it!
You will need:
- Café La Carreta Premium Espresso Blend
- A 3-cup Moka pot
- A mixing cup
- 2 tacitas or espresso cups
- A spoon or fork for mixing
- Sugar
- Water
1. Prepare the Coffee in the Moka Pot
Unscrew the bottom chamber of the pot and remove its filter. Be careful to fill the chamber with filtered water until it reaches the safety release valve on the inside of the chamber.
Put the filter back on, fill all the way to the top with coffee, and even it out using the back of a spoon or your finger.
Next, screw the top back on so that it’s tight, and place the Moka pot on the stove over medium heat. Keep the lid open so that you can see when coffee drops start to form (this is very important).
2. Get Ready for the Foam
Leave the coffee to brew, and grab your measuring cup and pour in 2-4 tablespoons of sugar. The amount of sugar you decide to use depends on how sweet you like it. I like my coffee very sweet and strong, so 6 tablespoons is perfect for me!
While the coffee is brewing, the water will be pushed through the coffee grounds. The first drops of hot coffee (the strongest!) will appear in the top chamber. Once this happens, grab the Moka pot and pour those first few drops over the sugar.
(Place the Moka pot back on the stove to finish brewing. When it’s ready, remove from the stove and set aside).
Now comes the fun part. Mix the azuquita (sugar) with the coffee. I like to use a fork because the mixture doesn’t stick to it as much. You have to be patient and vigorous while mixing! Your mixture should be a beautiful caramel color and should be frothy.
3. Serve and Enjoy
Grab your Moka pot and pour the rest of the brewed coffee on top of the sugar mixture. This will create a thick layer of foam on the top. You’re almost there!
Pour the coffee into the tacitas, and get ready to share a delicious cafecito with your loved ones!
As you can see, the secret to cafecito is in the details. The sugar mixture, or azuquita, is a vital component of a cafecito, and it’s what makes it so much different from a regular espresso.
The azuquita also creates a smooth layer of foam, or espumita, on top of the cafecito. This results in a rich, robust cup of coffee with the perfect amount of sweetness.
But of course, these details are not just limited to the flavor. The cafecito is the embodiment of Cuban culture in one cup of coffee. It is about taking a moment out of your day to enjoy something that Cubans have prepared for many years with love. It is also about sharing this delicious drink with friends, strangers, and loved ones. And with it, we also share stories of our lives.
So take a sip and share your stories with us!
